College Training: Our Human Spirit, Companions, and Prayer
As the uniquely qualified ones to preach the gospel on the campuses, the college students must realize their top responsibility: to announce the good news to the seeking ones and bring them to the Lord. During this past college training, the speaking brothers commissioned the young people to release the gospel as a wildfire on their campuses, and challenged them to bear at least one remaining fruit this coming year.
However, in order to properly answer this call, we must take into account three things. Firstly, we need to pay attention to our spirit. As those who have been grafted into the cultivated olive tree, we can all declare that “it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.” But we must also make this fact our subjective experience by unceasingly calling on His name and joining our spirit to His. Without a constant exercise of the spirit, whatever we try to accomplish will be in the realm of religion, which is characterized mainly by two words: “without Christ.” Like the Galatian believers, we need a turn from “works of law” to “abiding in the vine,” taking Christ as the source of all that we are and do.
Secondly, we need companions. In this age, it is impossible to pursue the Lord individually. Aside from our general fellowship with all the saints, we need to be built up with one or two others in a practical way. This will firstly protect us from the enemy. Ecclesiastes 4:13 says that while one may prevail against Satan, “two will withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.” However, we need to realize that our companionship is not merely defensive; as companions we must be on the offensive with the gospel. To cause the kingdom of Satan to suffer loss, we need the dominion and the power that is only found in the Body.
Lastly, we need much prayer. If we are not in our spirit, we must pray ourselves into the spirit. If we do not have companions, we must pray to the Lord to give us some. When we come together on our campuses for coordination, we must pray before doing anything. And if we do not have a burden for the gospel, we can even pray that the Lord would give us one. Through prayer, we will be built up in oneness for the sake of the gospel. Through prayer, the Lord will have a way to move on the campuses.
